2021: Improved Upwork Proposal Templates

My Latest Freelance Proposal Templates for Common Client Styles That Should Work for Most Freelancers Most of the Time (If You Modify the Templates for Your Clients).

Forest Beaver!

When I was a kid, I was in the car with my parents, staring out the window. We came up to a stop sign. I saw an animal on the side of the road not far from the tree line. Didn't know what it was, but I shouted, "Forest Beaver!" My parents, mid-conversation, fell silent... then they burst with laughter.

If you suck at writing proposals, this is for you. If you don't know what to say or how to say it to attract client attention, that's who I made these templates for.

When you don't get responses, it has nothing to do with there being too much competition. It has nothing to do with clients only wanting to pay low rates. It just means that the client does not think that you are the exact right person for the job. Mostly, that's because your proposals don't prove that you understand the client at a deeper level.

This document contains a series of proposal templates designed to work for some of the most common freelance client types. These templates are based on different client personality preferences to help you grab attention fast without spending hours figuring out exactly what to say.

For best results, read the client's job post carefully and pay attention for clues that tell you which template will work best for that client. Then modify the template so it fits the client's job post, and their specific problems. Make sense? Great! Then let's get started.

P.S. If you have any questions, bring them to my free discord chat here.

Basic YOU Focus Proposal

YOU Focus proposals are my cornerstone approach. This simple style works for most clients most of the time. If you're not a copywriter or don't have time for fancy stuff, then default to this template. It focuses on the client and their problem, and on quickly connecting your services as the right solution for that problem.

The "Look at Me"

Some clients are clearly all about image/status/prestige. These clients talk about who they know, who they work with, how much their business or their clients are worth. Basically, their job posts talk about things that make them look good. They're very ego-driven. So this template highlights your credibility to suggest that, "by working with me, you are affiliating yourself with these other things."

The "Catch All"

This proposal is for when you're not completely sure what the client's exact problem is, but you know the general thing they say they need help with. It connects your service to their needs, drops a relevant piece of credibility to build interest, and then highlights things that are typically valuable for clients.

We then sign off with a signature they might remember, and add a P.S. statement to go a step beyond where other freelancers end their proposal. We want to let this client know that we are ready to serve them whenever they need us, even if that isn't right now.

P.S. Good copywriters are hard to come by, and you have many choices. I hope you will at least meet with me, but even if you've already hired, keep my info in case you need someone on-call for later. Talk soon.

By the way, you don't have to put your email in your signature. That was just an example of something you can do. You could also put your website or phone number there. I use whichever one feels most appropriate for the client.

I know some freelancers worry about getting in trouble by Upwork. If that's a problem for you, then you don't have to put contact information there, but you are going to lose out to people like me who aren't afraid to do it.

The "Creative Disaster"

These clients are all about creativity. Their job posts are infused with emotion and uniqueness - spewing passion like a Unicorn that had one too many Screwdrivers.  It's high energy and full of metaphors or stories, so that's how your proposal has to be.

Hi Design Ninjas!

I'm looking for an awesome designer! Someone who's so good they could design pants for Garfield the cat! Our products all revolve around cats, because my husband and I are cat people. In fact, we have ten cats in our cat motel! As a business, we're like magic rainbow dust, but our website is more of a dusty dungeon and we need you to be our Mr. Clean!

[Creative Headline]

[Unconventional greeting]!

[Unique, fun, YOU Focused first line]! [Mention something relatable]!

[Address the problem using their metaphors and relate your services with your own creative metaphor], so maybe we're a match!
