Searching for Private Lessons in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Near Joplin, Missouri?

Hi, I’m Lex DeVille, and over the past few years I went from knowing nothing about BJJ to becoming one of the most prominent adult competitors in the Midwest. Now, I offer private lessons in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for those who want to learn, grow, and improve at one of the fastest growing combat sports and martial arts.

If you’re looking for BJJ private lessons near Joplin, MO without the commitment of a gym or the cost of a black belt instructor, I can help.

How Much Do Private Lessons Cost?

My rate is $240 per month for one 1-hour lesson per week. If you bundle multiple months I will discount the rate for you.

Where Will We Train At?

You are welcome to train at my home location. I setup mats in my garage so we can open the door for airflow to keep things simple. If you prefer to train at your location, you will need at least a 10×10 space for the mats, but I am happy to come to you if you live in the Joplin area.

Do You Teach Kids?

Yes. For the past year I served as Assistant Coach for all kids classes at Springfield Fight Club. I also have a young daughter who I train, so kids are welcome. Whether you just want them to learn to defend themselves or they’re looking to compete, I have coached kids in both. I even have a kid-sized grappling dummy to help with learning fundamental concepts.

Do You Teach Adults?

Yes. I have served as Assistant Coach for Adult fundamentals classes at Springfield Fight Club, in addition to providing private lessons for adults. Whether you’re just curious about BJJ, want to learn to defend yourself, or even if you want to compete, I can help.

What Should I Wear?

Please wear a t-shirt and comfy shorts. The kind of clothing you’d wear to any fitness gym is fine.

Will I Have to Roll?

While rolling is a core part of BJJ and while I think it is extremely valuable for every person to roll, you do not have to do anything you are not comfortable with. If you’d like to bring a friend with you to roll with, then I am happy to coach both of you so you can work together to learn BJJ all for one price.

Is This Like Karate?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu does not involve strikes and kicks. BJJ is the art of ground fighting. In BJJ, you learn to control your opponent on the ground – how to pin them and stop them from punching or kicking you, as well as how to submit them by way of join locks like the armbar, or via choke holds such as the Rear Naked Choke. If you want to learn the art of striking, you will want to attend a gym that offers Muay-Thai or Dutch Kickboxing.

Is This Safe?

All combat sports carry an inherent risk; however, most of those risks are mitigated through the teaching of proper technique in a safe environment. We will work slowly and deliberately to ensure you learn as much as possible while being as safe as possible. Usually, new white belts in jiu-jitsu experience some soreness in their muscles, or minor injuries like bruises that result from learning to control your own movement, balance, and body.
